Semester 1

Accounting and Financial Analysis
Business Systems and Planning
Finance and Financial Markets
Decision and Risk Analysis
In the first semester key areas of accounting and finance and decision-making are covered.
Accounting and Financial Analysis – Covers topics such as the purpose of the main accounting statements; the regulatory framework; analysis and interpretation of company accounts; mergers and acquisitions.
Business Systems and Planning – Is more concerned with the design of accounting information systems for managers. For example, preparing business plans including budgeting; accounting information for decision making, designing and developing decision support systems.
Finance and Financial Markets – considers
1. The introduction of the fundamentals of modern finance and their applications to the financial management of an organisation.
2. The financial environment. In particular the macroeconomy and macro and micro economic analysis of financial markets and Institutions.
Decision and Risk Analysis – Covers key areas of decision and risk analysis including fundamental concepts which can be used to understand and improve the process of decision making; key statistical concepts; selecting and using appropriate software tools as aids to decision making.
The aim is that by the end of the first semester, students will have a good understanding of key areas of accounting, finance and approaches to decision making. This will provide the underpinning for units studied in the second semester.

Corporate Finance
Research Methods
Option 1
Option 2
As core, students need to study Corporate Finance and Research Methods. The former looks in more depth at key theoretical and empirical issues in domestic and multi-national corporate financial management and their practical applications and limitations.
