Schwerpunkte / Curriculum
The programme is based on a relationship between theory and practice which allows students to understand critical ideas and subject their work to robust scrutiny thus negotiating contexts that will lead to new artistic insights and an invigoration of their practice. The modular structure of the programme is designed to encourage personal artistic development, and students are free to choose their own way of working within the programme modules. Students take two modules in each semester. In the first year students take practice-based modules and theoretical modules. This provides the means by which students are able to establish their practice and working procedures. Through this suite of modules, students gain the necessary critical insights which will allow them to assume an informed position in relation to the development of their own work.
The second year involves the personal development of studio practice with the intention that students will be able to draw on the insights that they have gained from the theory modules in order to establish a personal critical context for their practice. A Studio Practice as Research module provides the means by which students are able to frame this practice in a research context and construct a critically robust exhibition proposal. During the latter part of the fourth semester and summer period of the second year of study, students will be engaged in realising this proposal. The MA project is considered as a research project where a body of creative work is accompanied by a critical and contextual rationale.
