Creative and Critical Writing
Schwerpunkte / Curriculum
Programme Structure
The programme combines core and optional modules on a wide range of creative and critical disciplines.
Core Areas of Study
The core modules concentrate on the different kinds of writing available to the creative writer, and the critical and interpretative context in which writing takes place:
- Writing Poetry
- Writing Prose
- Critical Writing
- Varieties of Factual Writing
- Literary History
- Writing and Research
- Style, Form and Genre
Examples of Optional Areas of Study
Allowing students to develop, and explore further, issues and practices related to the above core areas, a range of options is offered which, typically, encourage students to:
- develop a specialist interest in the writing of prose or poetry;
- examine the practical conventions of any given writing genre (for instance, science
fiction);
- consider the practical relationship between writing and film, particularly the art of
adaptation;
- study writing in progress, specifically through the analysis of writers’ drafts;
- develop a specialist interest in forms of factual writing;
- investigate theory, writing and the creative process (examining, for instance, the
usefulness of narrative theory for writing fiction);
- consider the implications of live and recorded performance for writing for a particular
medium.
